The secret behind Phuket’s most successful charity events

On an island where Sunday brunches, DJ takeovers, visits from Miss Universe contestants, and Michelin-chef dinners crowd the social calendar, competing for attention is no small task.

So how do charity events stand out in Phuket’s hyper-saturated scene? There’s only one way: they must be brighter, better curated, and more memorable than any party.

For more than 20 years, the Phuket Has Been Good To Us (PHBGTU) Foundation has funded English-language education for underprivileged children – and done so largely through events that locals mark in their calendars months in advance. Here are a few recent highlights.

This year’s Halloween gathering was a relaxed, family-friendly barbecue at Niran Farm – designed so parents didn’t have to choose between a kids’ event and an adults-only evening. Children enjoyed more than two dozen games hosted by students from local international schools, while grown-ups were treated to live music by EKA Soundz. The event raised ฿150,000 for the foundation’s programs.

Another standout was the annual Melbourne Cup Brunch at Casa Boho. Inspired by the elegance of the race-day culture, guests arrived dressed to impres – ladies in chic dresses and hats, gentlemen opted for sharp suits. The programme included dancing, a charity auction, and a best-dressed competition.

Events at Sole Mio Hotel have also become a staple of the PHBGTU calendar. As Bang Tao’s only venue offering panoramic sea views from above, it provides a unique setting. Taking full advantage of the seventh-floor pool deck, the foundation hosts its gatherings under the open sky, where guests enjoy drking, sea breezes, and live music.

Most importantly, guests know that every ticket directly supports English lessons for Phuket’s schoolchildren – the very children who may one day become the island’s future hotel staff, chefs and community leaders.
