For those familiar with the music scene in Phuket, one name consistently stands out – Boy Navio. Combining talent with charisma, Boy has become a beloved figure on the island. His journey is not just about music – it’s about passion, identity, and authenticity in a world often driven by business.

“I’ve been a musician for 25 years now, starting when I was just 15,” Boy shares. “My father was a musician, and I saw him as my hero. Naturally, I followed in his footsteps.”

For Boy, music is a passion, not a business. “I’ve always focused on playing from the heart, without letting profit come first,” he says.

Born to a Filipino father and a Thai mother, Boy had his early life shaped by music. He was even born in Hong Kong, during his father’s music tours around the world!

Boy’s family eventually settled in Phuket when he was around 7 or 8 years old. At 15, Boy chose a guitar over a longtail boat, a decision that defined his career.

“I’ve always been a Phuket musician,” he says proudly, sitting at Bebob, the jazz bar he opened eight years ago. “And as a child, I dreamed of owning a jazz bar.”

Boy says that his father always stressed the complexity of jazz and wanted him to learn this genre. Yet, Bebop’s repertoire is broad.

“At Bebop, we play anything that brings joy,” Boy says. “It’s not just jazz, but a mix of styles that reflect my mood and taste. The music here is truly who I am.”

The success of Bebop has brought Boy not only business but a sense of community, which he finds more important.

“I may not make a huge profit, but I’m proud of what I’ve built,” he reflects. “In this business, music comes first, then everything else follows.”

Looking forward, Boy hopes to inspire young musicians to embrace their individuality and “create from their own identity.”

“I’ve written my own songs, and even if they attract only a specific audience, I’m still proud,” Boys has humbly.

In fact, Boy’s talent has gained international recognition. He was selected to perform at Singapore’s F1 event in 2022 which was an experience that continues to leave a lasting impression on him.

His next dream? To release an album reflecting his journey and who he is as an artist… and keep going!

“I want to see more original music in Phuket and support the new generation in making that happen,” he says.
