Does the Phuket jungle hide any dinosaurs? From June 13 through July 16… yes, it does! Jurassic World 4, aka Jurassic City, is being filmed in the Phuket area right now, and we know at least one exact location!
Thailand has long been a favored destination for filmmakers, with numerous movies, TV series, commercials, and music videos shot in the country each year. The outlook for 2024 is particularly promising, thanks to the Thai Government’s support and financial incentives for international production companies.
Among the highlights of TV productions, HBO’s drama “The White Lotus” stands out as one of the top series filmed in Thailand this year. However, the biggest international blockbuster currently in production is Jurassic World 4 (also known as Jurassic City), set to star Scarlett Johansson among other actors.
Universal Pictures has chosen Thailand for the majority of the filming of Jurassic World 4, with studio shoots planned for Malta and the U.K. The lush Thai jungles will serve as the backdrop for the film, ensuring that the on-screen environment is as authentic as possible.
Jaturon Phakdeewanit, the head of the Department of Tourism of Thailand, confirmed that production will take place from June 13 through July 16 in locations including Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga, and Trang, as well as some scenes in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Notably, Huai To Waterfall within the Khao Phanom Bencha National Park in Krabi is among the confirmed locations.
Directed by Gareth Edwards and produced by Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall, and Patrick Crowley, Jurassic World 4 boasts a promising cast, including Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, Luna Blaise, and David Iacono. However, it remains unclear which cast members will be present in Thailand for June-July filming.
The seventh film in the Jurassic franchise was written by David Koepp, who also penned the scripts for Jurassic Park (1993) and The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997). Koepp has described the plot as “a completely fresh take launching a new Jurassic era.”
The story will be focusing on “three adults and three teens stranded on an island,” presumably the fictional Isla Nublar, the original setting of Jurassic Park and Jurassic World.
Luna Blaise is 22 years old now while David Iacono will turn 22 during the filming. Both are young and thus are speculated to play two of the three teens, though Universal has not confirmed these details. The second name – Jurassic City – also remains unexplained.
The Jurassic Park franchise celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2023. The original 1993 film, directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Michael Crichton’s novel, became the highest-grossing film ever at the time, earning nearly $1 billion globally.
The original “park” series continued with sequels in 1997 (The Lost World: Jurassic Park) and 2001 (Jurassic Park III).
In 2015, Universal revived the franchise with Jurassic World, which grossed $1.6 billion globally.
As of now, the “world” has already received two sequels: Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in 2018 and Jurassic World Dominion in 2021.
Additionally, Netflix released two animated series, Camp Cretaceous (2020–22) and Chaos Theory (2024). Also included in the franchise are theatrical performances, video games, short films and more.
Jurassic World 4 aka Jurassic City is set for release in 2025 and promises to be a thrilling addition to this iconic series, with Thailand’s stunning landscapes playing a starring role.
