Autcharawan (Gay) Pratumwan is renowned in Phuket as an entrepreneur, an innovator in IT and green energy, a community enthusiast, and a developer. Honoring International Women’s Day, we sat down with Gay to delve into her life and discover what it takes to become a woman Phuket is genuinely proud of.
RL: Please, tell us about your background. Where were you raised?
Khun Gay: My dad served in the army, so my family moved frequently. I was born in Hat Yai but grew up in various places, including Kanchanaburi (the famous River Kwai), Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Songkhla. I lost my mother in a tragic accident when I was 11 years old, and as the eldest sister, I had to grow up quickly. I attended Mahavajiravudh Songkhla High School and later moved to Bangkok, where I graduated from Ramkhamhaeng University with a degree in Accounting and Law.
How did you embark on the business path, and where has it led you so far?
I started my career with large corporations like the Shinawatra and Phillips Food (Thailand) at a management level. These experiences provided me with valuable learning opportunities, and as I was eager to learn, I quickly moved to more senior management positions and then decided to pursue entrepreneurship.
I co-founded an IT business in Singapore before moving to Phuket in 2001 and establishing our first local company, Island Technology Co., Ltd. Initially challenging as newcomers in Phuket, we quickly recognized the demand for our services. We were pioneers in our field as we integrated the IT and communication systems that people needed for hotels and properties. Dozens of companies use what we have designed and installed.
In 2019, I founded Smarter Energy Solution Co., Ltd., a venture focused on renewable energy. I went back to studying and researching the solar power technology and trends, ensuring a thorough understanding. Over 250 systems are now up and running throughout Thailand.
Additionally, I’ve maintained a law practice since 2013, and in 2023, I started a property development project called Alinda Villas with a group of friends… Located just 12 minutes away from Boat Avenue, it offers easy access in and out, away from the traffic in busy areas. The concept is building a home where beauty meets functionality. The show unit is ready for viewing since March 1, 2024, and we have received very positive feedback from property agents and buyers.
“Being a successful woman in Phuket is all about hard work, dedication and listening to your customers’ needs. Keep your feet on the ground and enjoy what you do.”
How do you balance life and work?
I focus on maintaining a healthy work-life balance. I make time for hobbies and sports, such as hiking, tennis, running, swimming and fitness, which I enjoy. Also have a passion for travel, so I set a goal to take at least three holidays per year to explore the world.
On weekends, I typically spend half of the day exercising and participating in sports activities, particularly enjoying swimming in the sea. In the afternoons, I indulge in one of my passions: cooking. I really enjoy preparing meals whenever I have free time. What do you love about Phuket? Phuket stands out for its combination of natural beauty, international community and plenty of outdoor activities. Phuket offers an excellent vibrant social scene. It feels like you’re working and vacationing simultaneously, making it a truly special place.
What advice would you give to foreign women considering relocating to Phuket?
Phuket may not be a big city, but it’s welcoming. It has diverse communities and people from all over the world. It also brings a plenty business opportunity; it is a great place to learn about different cultures and meet interesting people. Phuket can be very overwhelming, so make sure you remain who you are, and don’t pretend to be someone you are not.
